So I’ve taken the plunge and I’m going to start writing a blog(or at least try), probably the worst blog ever but stick with it, it may turn out to be decidedly average!
A BRIEF HISTORY
Being a skinny ginger kid growing up wasn’t the easiest with teasing and bullying but having as much football skills as a slug this was brought on ten fold!
So I decided to do something about it and joined my local traditional karate club when I was 12 years old. This seemed like an easy transition for me, maybe had something to do with growing up with old martial arts movies of Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, JCVD and Shô Kasugi.
I stuck with karate for 2 years and I moved in to freestyle karate/kickboxing. At 14 I found this to be a much more flowing style and not so rigid as the traditional stuff and related more to the classroom/playground battles.
For the next 13 years I turned from a skinny, ginger kid into a grumpy bearded man with my hair a lovely shade of ‘Californian Sunrise’ where I dabbled in other martial arts as in Taekwon Do, Lau Gar kung fu and other striking arts along the way. I got to a pretty decent level at one stage competing at world championships and coming 3rd at the British championships.
Fast forward a few years and add some kids into the equation and in 2010 I found Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(BJJ) at the ripe old age of 33!
Now being in striking arts for 21 years and suddenly finding out that I can no longer kick or punch people but instead choke, break limbs and destroy joints was a whole new ball game!!
4 years on from that I have my blue belt with 4 stripes under Dave ‘Speedy’ Elliott and Marc Walder.
Hopefully this hasn’t been too much of a strain to read as it has to write and join me on my Jiu Jitsu journey along the way.
